Montenegrin and U.S. Relations
The United States first established diplomatic relations with Montenegro on October 30, 1905 following the country's independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. After Montenegro regained its independence in 2006, the United States resumed diplomatic relations with the country. Montenegro joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on June 5, 2017 (U.S. Relations With Montenegro, 2018).
Per the U.S. State Department (2018), the United State's "policy toward Montenegro is structured to help the country transition to a prosperous, market-based democracy, fully integrated into Euro-Atlantic institutions including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union" (U.S. Relations With Montenegro).
In supporting Montenegro politically, the United States hopes to deepen their ties with the country, therefore creating more employment and economic opportunities, all the while ensuring that Montenegro adopts Western ideals and practices, rather than turning to the East for support and influence.

Montenegrin and U.K. Relations
As of December 2008, Montenegro is a European Union (EU) candidate country. The British government is strongly in support of Montenegro's acceptance to the EU, as evidenced by the mission statement of the British Embassy in Montenegro:
"We support Montenegro’s efforts on political and institutional reform to reach the standards required for membership of the EU, and in line with its membership of NATO, by developing effective independent institutions, tackling organised crime and corruption, and protecting human rights. We provide consular support to British nationals in Montenegro. We are promoting economic reform with the aim of reducing business barriers in Montenegro and increasing trade." (Montenegro and the UK, 2018).
Like the United States, the British government is in support of Montenegro politically, so as to bolster the relationship between the two countries, create economic opportunities, and ensure that Montenegro adopts the same Western European standards as the rest of the EU countries. In doing so, Montenegro becomes a political ally, and economic partner with the British government.
